How to Play
- Start a game. The 4×4 board opens with two small tiles, each showing a 2 or a 4.
- Swipe up, down, left or right on the board (or press an arrow key or W, A, S, D). Every tile slides as far as it can in that direction.
- When two tiles with the same number bump into each other, they join into one tile worth double — two 8s become a 16.
- After every move a new 2 (or, now and then, a 4) appears in an empty square.
- Keep merging until you create the 2048 tile. You can carry on after that for an even bigger number.
- The game ends when the board is full and no swipe can join any tiles.
Rules
Each merge adds the value of the new tile to your score, so joining two 64s gives you 128 points. A tile can only join once per swipe, which means a row of 2, 2, 2, 2 pushed to the left becomes 4, 4 rather than a single 8. A swipe that would not move or join anything does not count, and no new tile appears.
The new tile is a 2 nine times out of ten and a 4 the rest of the time. You get one free undo in every game, which takes back your last swipe along with the tile that appeared after it. If you make the 2048 tile before the board locks up, the game counts as a win and your final score is saved as your best.
Tips & Strategy
- Pick a home corner and stay loyal to it. Keep your biggest tile in one corner, such as the bottom left. Most experienced players almost never swipe away from that corner.
- Build a staircase along the edge. Line up tiles in falling order next to your corner tile — 512, 256, 128, 64 — so each new merge can roll down the row like a chain reaction.
- Avoid the fourth direction. If your corner is at the bottom, use down, left and right freely but treat up as an emergency move. One careless up swipe can drop a small tile into your corner and wreck the pattern.
- Keep the bottom row full. A full row can only slide sideways, so your big tiles stay locked in place while you work on the rows above.
- Save the undo for a disaster. It is tempting to use it on a slightly weak swipe, but it is worth far more later, when a surprise tile lands in your corner.

2048 is a single-player puzzle with two ways to play. Standard gives you a fresh random board every time you press Play, perfect for a quick break or a long record attempt. The Daily Challenge hands everyone in the country the exact same starting board and the same sequence of new tiles for the day, so the only difference between players is skill. Finish it once a day to grow your streak, then share your result.
Play with Friends
There is no online room for this puzzle, but the daily board makes it a great friendly contest. Everyone plays the same tiles, so compare scores in your family group or class chat. When your game ends, tap Share to send a short, spoiler-free line showing your biggest tile and your points on WhatsApp or Telegram, and challenge your friends to beat it before midnight.
